  31.      Pronoun Problems, Long Sentences, Multiple
  32.      Prepositions, Nearly Doubled Words, Missing Comma
  33.      Phrases, Nominalizations, Padding, Passive,
  34.      Prepositions At End of Sentence, Redundant Phrases,

  53. Background:
  54. EXPRESS is an inexpensive writing aid. Use it to write short,
  55. active sentences.
  56.  
  57. EXPRESS reads your file a sentence at a time. After it reads a
  58. sentence it checks for a variety of grammar, style, and
  59. punctuation problems. It FLASHES the sentences and suggestions on
  60. the screen. Press any key to pause or terminate program
  61. execution.

  63. The program puts the suggestions, problems, and sentences into a
  64. separate file called the marked-up copy. The program never
  65. changes the original file. 
  66.  
  67. After it reads your file (or the first 9000 characters of a long
  68. file), the program gives a screen message telling you where to
  69. find your marked-up copy and how to print it. 
  70.  
  71. After you print your marked-up copy, use a sharp pencil and 
  72. begin re-writing. You'll find that some suggestions may require
  73. you to reorganize your text and rewrite your sentences. After you
  74. edit your original file, you can repeat the process.

  76. EXPRESS version 2.01.S is hardwired; you cannot configure the
  77. type of problems it reports.

  81. Compatible Word Processing Text Files:
  82. EXPRESS reads ascii text files (0 to 127), Wordperfect 4.2 files,
  83. and WordPerfect 5.0 files.

  85. You can try EXPRESS on any word processor's text file. If the
  86. output is not acceptable, then use your word processor to
  87. transform your text file into an ascii file. Then run EXPRESS on
  88. this ascii file.

  91. Commands:
  92. EXPRESS has no commands. To use EXPRESS, type EXPRESS followed by
  93. the pathname of your  workfile. Let's consider three examples.

  95. Example 1.
  96.     You have a two disk system. You keep your word processor  on
  97. a floppy diskette in the a: drive. You keep your text files on a
  98. diskette in the b: drive. 
  99.     Suppose that you want to check the file "letter.nov" on the
  100. diskette in the b: drive. Leave your word processor. Change to
  101. the a: drive by typing a: at the DOS prompt. Put the EXPRESS
  102. diskette in the a: drive. Type EXPRESS  b:letter.nov and press
  103. the return key

  107. Example 2.
  108.     You have a hard disk. You keep your word processor in the
  109. directory \wp on the hard disk. You have copied the EXPRESS
  110. diskette to the subdirectory with pathname \grammar on the hard
  111. disk. 
  112.     Suppose that you want to check the file "chap1.ref" which
  113. you keep on the hard disk in the directory with pathname
  114. \wp\english. Leave your word processor. Change to the
  115. subdirectory \grammar by typing cd \grammar at the DOS prompt

  128.     You have two hard disks. You keep your word processor in the
  129. directory with the pathname c:\wp. You have copied the EXPRESS
  130. diskette to the subdirectory with pathname d:\timp\grammar.  
  131.     Suppose that the file that you want to check is on a floppy
  132. diskette in the a: drive and has the name "involved.yes." Leave
  133. your word processor. Change to the d: disk by typing d: and
  134. pressing the return key.

  147. Marked-up Copy:
  148. EXPRESS puts the problems it finds in the file 'jr.1' and puts
  149. that file in the directory that contains your workfile. EXPRESS
  150. never changes the original file.

  154. The following files must be present in the same directory:

  161. Read.me:
  162. Read.me provides the Shareware documentation for EXPRESS. It is
  163. an ASCII file and can be read by all major word processors. You
  164. may send Read.me to the screen by using the DOS command Type. You
  165. may send Read.me to the printer by using the DOS command Print.

  203. EXPRESS version 2.01.S is distributed as Shareware.

  205. Shareware distributes commercial software in an unconventional
  206. manner. Microcomputers copy information easily. Instead of using
  207. copy protection to frustrate distribution, Shareware takes
  208. advantage of the simplicity of copying to reach as many users as
  209. possible. You may copy this Shareware program and distribute it
  210. to whomever you desire, provided you follow the terms of the
  211. above license.

  213. Shareware isn't free. Serious Shareware is as polished as any
  214. conventional commercial product, and represents as much
  215. programming effort. If you use Shareware regularly, then

  239. more expensive version of EXPRESS without the 9000 character
  240. limit. We also offer a version that lets you change the grammar
  241. settings. We send a detailed brochure of these other programs to
