-
-
- Background:
- EXPRESS is an inexpensive writing aid. Use it to write short,
- active sentences.
-
- EXPRESS reads your file a sentence at a time. After it reads a
- sentence it checks for a variety of grammar, style, and
- punctuation problems. It FLASHES the sentences and suggestions on
- the screen. Press any key to pause or terminate program
- execution.
-
- The program puts the suggestions, problems, and sentences into a
- separate file called the marked-up copy. The program never
- changes the original file.
-
- After it reads your file (or the first 9000 characters of a long
- file), the program gives a screen message telling you where to
- find your marked-up copy and how to print it.
-
- After you print your marked-up copy, use a sharp pencil and
- begin re-writing. You'll find that some suggestions may require
- you to reorganize your text and rewrite your sentences. After you
- edit your original file, you can repeat the process.
-
- EXPRESS version 2.01.S is hardwired; you cannot configure the
- type of problems it reports.

-
-
- Compatible Word Processing Text Files:
- EXPRESS reads ascii text files (0 to 127), Wordperfect 4.2 files,
- and WordPerfect 5.0 files.
-
- You can try EXPRESS on any word processor's text file. If the
- output is not acceptable, then use your word processor to
- transform your text file into an ascii file. Then run EXPRESS on
- this ascii file.
-
-
- Commands:
- EXPRESS has no commands. To use EXPRESS, type EXPRESS followed by
- the pathname of your workfile. Let's consider three examples.
-
- Example 1.
- You have a two disk system. You keep your word processor on
- a floppy diskette in the a: drive. You keep your text files on a
- diskette in the b: drive.
- Suppose that you want to check the file "letter.nov" on the
- diskette in the b: drive. Leave your word processor. Change to
- the a: drive by typing a: at the DOS prompt. Put the EXPRESS
- diskette in the a: drive. Type EXPRESS b:letter.nov and press
- the return key
-
- A>EXPRESS b:letter.nov <RTN>
-
- Example 2.
- You have a hard disk. You keep your word processor in the
- directory \wp on the hard disk. You have copied the EXPRESS
- diskette to the subdirectory with pathname \grammar on the hard
- disk.
- Suppose that you want to check the file "chap1.ref" which
- you keep on the hard disk in the directory with pathname
- \wp\english. Leave your word processor. Change to the
- subdirectory \grammar by typing cd \grammar at the DOS prompt
-
- C>cd \grammar <RTN>
-
- Now type EXPRESS \wp\english\chap1.ref and press the return
- key
-
- C>EXPRESS \wp\english\chap1.ref <RTN>

-
-
- Example 3.
- You have two hard disks. You keep your word processor in the
- directory with the pathname c:\wp. You have copied the EXPRESS
- diskette to the subdirectory with pathname d:\timp\grammar.
- Suppose that the file that you want to check is on a floppy
- diskette in the a: drive and has the name "involved.yes." Leave
- your word processor. Change to the d: disk by typing d: and
- pressing the return key.
-
- C>d: <RTN>
-
- Now change to the \timp\grammar directory by typing cd
- \timp\grammar and pressing the return key.
-
- D>cd \timp\grammar <RTN>
-
- Now type EXPRESS a:involved.yes and press the return key.
-
- D>EXPRESS a:involved.yes <RTN>
-
- Marked-up Copy:
- EXPRESS puts the problems it finds in the file 'jr.1' and puts
- that file in the directory that contains your workfile. EXPRESS
- never changes the original file.
-
-
- Critical Files:
- The following files must be present in the same directory:
- EXPRESS.exe
- EXPRESS.ind
- EXPRESS.dct
- EXPRESS.dic
- Read.me
-
- Read.me:
- Read.me provides the Shareware documentation for EXPRESS. It is
- an ASCII file and can be read by all major word processors. You
- may send Read.me to the screen by using the DOS command Type. You
- may send Read.me to the printer by using the DOS command Print.

-
-
- Shareware:
- EXPRESS version 2.01.S is distributed as Shareware.
-
- Shareware distributes commercial software in an unconventional
- manner. Microcomputers copy information easily. Instead of using
- copy protection to frustrate distribution, Shareware takes
- advantage of the simplicity of copying to reach as many users as
- possible. You may copy this Shareware program and distribute it
- to whomever you desire, provided you follow the terms of the
- above license.
-
- Shareware isn't free. Serious Shareware is as polished as any
- conventional commercial product, and represents as much
- programming effort. If you use Shareware regularly, then
- compensate the authors!
-
- However, unlike conventional distribution, Shareware lets you
- evaluate the product before you decide to purchase it. We have
- purposely set a low registration fee. We want students, schools,
- secretaries, managers, and writers to use it. We want to help
- people write better.
-
- But it can only work with your support. If you are still using a
- Shareware product after a couple of weeks, then you should become
- a registered user.
-
- You may become a registered EXPRESS version 2.01.S user for $9.99
- by sending your name, address and comments to:
-
- Timp Software, Box 37, Orem Utah 84059.
-
- When you register we will send you a manual, the latest
- non-Shareware version of EXPRESS (which runs much faster than the
- shareware version), and information on additional computerized
- writing aids. The manual gives additional details on grammar,
- punctuation, style and explains relevant grammar terms. We will
- notify each registered user about the next update. We offer a
- more expensive version of EXPRESS without the 9000 character
- limit. We also offer a version that lets you change the grammar
- settings. We send a detailed brochure of these other programs to
- all registered users.
